Have a look through this short PowerPoint presentation. Don't worry if you don't have PowerPoint - you can download a Free Powerpoint Viewer from this web-site http://tonicsystems.com/products/viewer/?gclid=CJThjOSXpoYCFR5-QgodSGwIBw

It covers 3 basic starting positions under a 4 - 4 - 2 formation depending on whether we are:-
a) Defending deep -for those times when we're under the cosh or up against a pacy attack and we need to deny them space in behind our back four
b) Defending middle third - probably where most of our games will be fought
c) Defending high up the pitch - for those times when we are playing really weaker teams who pose little threat in attack.
It also highlights the necessary team movements during a change in a phase of play.
If you play DEFENCE or MIDFIELD at any time, you need to STUDY these synchronised movements carefully. Hopefully we can have a go at some of them in training to improve and tighten up on our positional play both INDIVIDUALLY and as a TEAM UNIT.
a) Switching quickly from Defence to Attack
b) Recovering quickly from Attack back to Defence
Make sure YOU know YOUR positions and HOW to adjust your position on the field, relative to any particular game situation. If we can get EVERY PLAYER synchronised and working together as a team, then I think we'll be a lot more solid defensively and there will be better support when it comes to attacking options.
